In the light of Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Day, I thought it would be useful to raise awareness about some of the symptoms that go along with depression and anxiety.

If we can start to recognise some of these symptoms in ourselves and others, we can access help from a GP who can also make the appropriate referral to a Psychologist.

Major Depression

Major Depression includes low mood that is intense and persists for longer than 2 weeks and significantly interferes with day-to-day functioning. People with depression feel hopeless and guilty, often blaming themselves for everything.

They experience physical symptoms such as changes to sleep patterns, appetite and energy levels, they tend to withdraw from others and they stop doing things they previously enjoyed.

In addition to sadness, anxiety is often experienced alongside depression. Many clients also present with generalised anxiety, and this is when worry, feelings of anxiety and tension persist to the point that they significantly interfere with daily life.

Generalised Anxiety

Generalised anxiety is anxiety or worry about several things for at least 6 months. The worry is experienced as excessive and uncontrollable and makes it difficult to focus on tasks. People also describe feeling restless/unable to relax, physical tension, sleep disturbance, problems concentrating, feeling irritable and feeling tired.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to ask for advice(and a psychology referral) from your GP, as medication and cognitive behavioural therapy can be helpful in alleviating these symptoms.
