What Is Healthy Fat?

There is a lot of confusion when it comes to our dietary fats. The truth is, not all fats are created equally. There are types of fats that we should be including regularly in our diet, and ones that we should be having in moderation.

When it comes to our health, particularly our heart health, it is our unsaturated fats that we should be including regularly, as these can help reduce the risk of high blood cholesterol levels as well as providing us with many other health benefits.

Unsaturated Fats

Healthy unsaturated fats come in two main forms, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. These differ in their chemical structure and have slightly different health benefits as a result.

How do I include more of them in my diet?

  • Using extra virgin olive oil for cooking
  • Try using avocado on toast/sandwiches in place of butter
  • Eating fish and seafood, particularly oily fish like salmon at least twice a week
  • Snacking on nuts, or adding them to your salads and stir fries or using them in butter form (like peanut/almond butters or tahini)
