The benefits of Exercise as Medicine have been well documented as a preventative healthcare measure as well as in the treatment of chronic conditions.
Alarming statistics show that almost half of the entire Australian population suffer from one of eight chronic conditions including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental illness, with further evidence that lack of physical activity is a primary risk factor.
So… are Australian people exercising enough?
According to Professor Rob Newton exercise is the best medication. “If it was a pill … then possibly every general practitioner in the country would prescribe it to every patient who was at risk of a chronic disease.”
Check out part two of Insight’s exercise special – where they examine the role of exercise in treating chronic health conditions and ask, is exercise really medicine?
